Units

Overview

In Fields of Valour: Normandy, every battle begins with a carefully balanced force of 12 units, each fulfilling a distinct battlefield role. Understanding how these units move, defend, attack and interact with terrain is essential to gaining the upper hand. Your army is composed of 5 infantry, 3 artillery and 4 tanks, and each behaves differently once deployed onto the hex‑grid battlefield.

Infantry

Infantry form the backbone of your force. They are the first units deployed and are responsible for establishing early control of terrain, securing defensive positions and forming the initial front line. Infantry are versatile, able to move steadily across most terrain types, and they benefit greatly from cover such as woods, hills and towns. Their ability to dig in gives them a temporary defensive boost, allowing them to hold ground more effectively when under pressure. Well‑placed infantry can anchor your formation and protect more vulnerable units behind them.

Artillery

Artillery units provide long‑range firepower and are deployed after infantry. They are slower and more vulnerable at close range, but their ability to strike from a distance makes them invaluable for softening enemy positions and supporting advancing troops. Artillery can hide using camo netting, reducing the chance of being targeted while they prepare to fire or reposition. Keeping artillery protected behind infantry lines and using terrain to shield them is key to maintaining their effectiveness throughout the battle.

Tanks

Tanks are your most powerful offensive units and are deployed last. They offer strong mobility, high attack potential and the ability to break through enemy lines when used decisively. Tanks are particularly effective on open terrain, where their movement is unhindered and their firepower can be fully utilised. Their bonus ability allows them to deploy smoke, providing temporary cover that can shield themselves or nearby units from incoming fire. Tanks are best used to exploit weaknesses, support infantry pushes and deliver decisive blows once the enemy is weakened.

Terrain Interaction

Terrain plays a significant role in how each unit performs. Defensive positions dramatically increase survivability, while exposed ground leaves units vulnerable to concentrated attacks. Infantry benefit most from cover, artillery rely on protected positions to avoid direct fire, and tanks thrive in open spaces where they can manoeuvre freely. Mastering terrain use is essential to making your units last longer and hit harder.

Deployment Order

The British always deploy first, placing their units across the middle section of the hex board. Infantry are deployed first, followed by artillery, then tanks. This structured order ensures that each battle begins with a clear tactical shape, encouraging players to think carefully about positioning, protection and early momentum. The Germans deploy afterwards, responding to the British layout and preparing their own strategy for the opening turns.
